The World Health Organization (WHO) warned on Wednesday of a 'catastrophic collision of disease and conflict' in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, where ongoing fighting is crippling efforts to contain a deadly Ebola outbreak.

A Plea for Peace

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus issued the stark warning in a statement published on the news platform X. "Wir können weder das Vertrauen der Bevölkerung gewinnen noch Kranke isolieren, während Bomben fallen," he wrote, underscoring the impossible conditions facing health workers.

Tedros appealed directly to the warring parties to agree on an immediate ceasefire so that the outbreak can be contained. "Wir bitten dringend, das Überleben der Menschen über alles andere zu stellen," he added.
