Wildfires kept fire departments in several Southern European countries on their toes over the weekend: In southern France, near the Greek port city of Thessaloniki, and in northern Portugal, thousands of emergency personnel simultaneously battled the flames.

On the French Mediterranean coast and in the Pyrenees, several severe wildfires broke out in recent days. More than 580 firefighters were deployed alone in the Département Pyrénées-Orientales, about 35 kilometers west of the city of Perpignan, according to authorities. Emergency personnel fought the flames across an area of 930 hectares, according to authorities. "Hunderte Feuerwehrleute sind im Einsatz", the fire department had announced.
