Ciudad Rodrigo, July 20, 2026
A 13-year-old boy died in the night leading into Monday in the small western Spanish town of Ciudad Rodrigo when a central stone column of a fountain collapsed during a victory celebration for the Spanish national football team.
What happened
According to the regional newspaper "Diario de Salamanca" and other media citing the city administration, the fountain's central stone column tipped over under the weight of several boys and fell onto revelers who were in the fountain's water. The 13-year-old was "crushed by the central stone column of a fountain," it was reported.
The city administration stated that what had been planned as a celebration of the Spanish national team's triumph at the World Cup had "turned into a tragedy": "Was eigentlich eine Feier zum Sieg der spanischen Nationalmannschaft bei der Fußball-Weltmeisterschaft hätte sein sollen, hat sich in eine Tragödie verwandelt".
