18-year-old paraglider crashes from around 150 meters in Greifenburg

Rescue operation and initial treatment

A 48-year-old man from the Netherlands witnessed the accident and immediately placed the emergency call, initiating the rescue chain. Rescue personnel from the Red Cross and the crew of the C7 rescue helicopter took over initial treatment at the accident site. The injured person was then flown by rescue helicopter to Villach State Hospital, where he is receiving further medical treatment.

The accident occurred on July 27, 2026, during the midday hours under weather conditions favorable for air sports. Greifenburg in the district of Spittal an der Drau is considered an established launch area for paragliders; the launch site is officially approved. Nevertheless, the canopy collapse, which triggered the crash, occurred for reasons that are still unclear.

Investigations into the cause of the crash

The emergency services on site coordinated recovery and medical care in the immediate vicinity of the Greifenburg swimming lake. The field on which the pilot crashed is located in an agricultural area. Eyewitnesses reported that the crash occurred out of the rotational movement and that the reserve parachute was therefore unable to open.

Regarding the current state of health of the 18-year-old, the police have not released any further details beyond the serious injuries. The relatives were informed according to Austrian standard through the consular authorities, as the injured person is a Dutch national. The responsible authorities are examining whether technical defects on the canopy or weather-related influences may have played a role.

Paragliding accidents involving such a loss of altitude are rare in the Austrian accident statistics, but are considered particularly dangerous in the community because, in the event of a canopy collapse, only a few seconds remain to deploy the reserve system. The reserve parachute can only fully deploy if the pilot's rotational movement is stopped. In this case, the rotation prevented opening.

The police investigations into the cause of the crash are ongoing. Information from the flying community and technical examinations of the canopy are intended to clarify why the main system failed. Until the investigations are completed, the executive asks for restraint in speculating about the cause of the accident.
