A 42-year-old cyclist was struck by a regional train at a railway crossing in Willstätt-Legelshurst in the Ortenau district on Saturday evening and succumbed to his severe injuries at the scene.

According to police, the 42-year-old attempted to ride past a half-barrier that was already closed and got one of his arms caught in the process. As a spokesperson stated, the man began to stagger and fell onto the tracks just as a train carrying 62 passengers was entering the crossing. The train driver immediately initiated an emergency braking maneuver but was unable to prevent the collision.

The cyclist died at the scene from his severe injuries. Emergency responders could only confirm his death. The exact circumstances of why the man attempted to ride around the closed barrier are the subject of the ongoing police investigation.
