Milna, September 13, 2026

Severe forest fires on the Croatian holiday island of Brač have destroyed more than 3,500 hectares of land, according to authorities, as firefighters on Sunday battle the flames around the coastal town of Milna.

The fires on the Adriatic island of Brač had spread in the days leading up to September 13, 2026, engulfing large areas of vegetation. According to the news agency HINA, the fire department put the affected area at more than 3,500 hectares. Among the areas affected is the region around the town of Milna on the island's west coast, which is known as a popular destination for domestic and international tourists.

Fire chief Nikola Martinić Dragan expressed confidence on Sunday that the fire could be brought under control the same day. He told HINA: "Der Wind weht immer noch, aber ich denke, wir haben gute Chancen, das Feuer bis zum Ende des Tages unter Kontrolle zu bringen". The continued wind was simultaneously considered the biggest obstacle to firefighting efforts, as it favored the spread of smoldering hotspots.
