A scrap pile roughly 40 by 40 meters in size and about 15 meters high on the premises of Salzgitter AG caught fire on Tuesday evening and kept firefighters busy for hours.

Outbreak on Tuesday evening

The scrap heap on the plant premises of steel company Salzgitter AG ignited around 7:00 p.m. As a spokesperson for the Salzgitter fire department described to NDR Niedersachsen around 9:00 p.m., the fire had dug deep into the scrap pile, significantly complicating access to the smoldering hotspots. The plant's own fire brigade alerted additional fire crews and requested support.

During the night, nearly 100 personnel were on site at times, extinguishing the burning scrap pile. A fire department spokesperson described how an excavator broke the large scrap heap apart piece by piece during the night so that the emergency crews could combat the fire: „Ein Bagger nahm den großen Schrotthaufen in der Nacht Stück für Stück auseinander, damit die Einsatzkräfte den Brand bekämpfen konnten, wie ein Sprecher der Feuerwehr schilderte.
