Power Outage in Salzburg: Around 350 Households Temporarily Without Electricity After Cable Damage

Salzburg Netz GmbH, which is responsible for operating the electricity grid in the city of Salzburg, dispatched technicians to the site of the disruption. According to Salzburg AG, they worked at full speed to repair the damage. It initially remained unclear how the underground cable had been damaged. Salzburg AG did not provide any information on the suspected cause on Monday. The company also did not initially comment on a possible connection with the railway crossings located in the area.

Affected Districts of Lehen and Elisabethvorstadt

Monday's outage affected an inner-city residential and commercial area. Both districts, Elisabethvorstadt and Lehen, lie west of Salzburg's Old Town and are among the more densely populated neighborhoods of the state capital. The company did not specify exactly how many households, businesses, or traffic facilities were without power.

Salzburg AG, as the regional energy provider, is responsible for electricity and heat supply in the city of Salzburg and its surrounding area. Salzburg Netz GmbH is a subsidiary that operates the electricity and gas grid. Disruptions in low-voltage and medium-voltage grids are recorded by the company's own control center and resolved by on-site response teams.

Repair and Further Steps

According to Salzburg AG, Monday's outage was an isolated disruption in the medium-voltage grid. The damaged cable, it said, would be repaired. Further information on the cause of the damage and on any potential compensation claims was to follow later in the week.

For residents in the affected districts, the outage meant roughly one hour without elevators, household appliances, and IT infrastructure, among other things. Salzburg AG reported no major consequences such as a failure of public transport or emergency numbers. Nothing was initially known about injuries or property damage either.

Salzburg AG pointed out that damage to an underground cable can also affect neighboring lines. Rapidly pinpointing the location of the damage was therefore crucial in order to restore supply step by step. In the present case, this had been achieved within one hour.

The incident occurred at the start of a heat wave in the city of Salzburg, during which temperatures were expected to rise significantly above 30 degrees Celsius. It was unclear on Monday whether the outage was related to the summer weather or to previous construction work. Salzburg Netz GmbH announced a technical investigation of the cable.
