A twelve-year-old boy fell around 15 meters down a ditch on the Gaisalmsteig between the Gaisalm and Achenkirch at Lake Achensee on Monday.
According to the emergency services, the accident occurred on a section of the Gaisalmsteig that runs from the Gaisalm toward Achenkirch. How the fall happened is the subject of the ongoing investigation.
Hikers coming upon the scene reportedly reacted immediately and provided first aid. They placed an emergency call and stayed with the injured child until the rescue teams arrived.
Rescue Operation in Steep Terrain
Due to the location in the terrain, the twelve-year-old was recovered by helicopter and flown to the Innsbruck clinic. No further details about the boy's condition were initially made known.
The Gaisalmsteig is considered a popular but challenging mountain trail above Lake Achensee. It leads from Pertisau or from the Gaisalm toward Achenkirch and features several exposed sections.
