Two and a half weeks after the worst earthquakes in Venezuela in over 120 years, only a fragile form of normality is returning to the country, as authorities struggle with the scale of the disaster and tens of thousands live without permanent shelter.

Destruction in La Guaira and Surrounding Areas

According to official figures, more than 4,300 people died in the devastating earthquakes in Venezuela. The government of Delcy Rodríguez cites the figure of 4,118 dead, but observers assume that the actual death toll is significantly higher. The two major quakes, of magnitudes 7.2 and 7.4, have destroyed much of the coastal city of La Guaira.
