Caracas, 6 July 2026
Roughly a week and a half after two severe earthquakes in Venezuela, the government assumes 3,342 dead and more than 16,000 injured, while survivors and aid organisations criticise the authorities' response as too slow.
On 24 June, two earthquakes of magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 struck Venezuela. According to international observers, the epicentre of both quakes was located in the north of the country, with the federal state of La Guaira hit hardest. Venezuela's Ministry of Information in Caracas stated that more than 3,340 people had lost their lives. On Sunday, the ministry specified the figure of 3,342 dead.
